High school football: Na Alii open with loss
By ROBERT COLLIAS, Staff Writer

PUKALANI — On offense or defense, there was way too much of the Tauai brothers for the King Kekaulike High School football team to handle on Friday night.

Phil Tauai accounted for three offensive touchdowns and his brother, Eddie Tauai, ran for a game-high 86 yards and had a 29-yard fumble return for a touchdown to lead Kalaheo to a convincing 34-7 win over Na Alii in the first prep football game of the season, at King Kekaulike Stadium.

”That’s a bad question,” King Kekaulike coach J.W. Kenton said when asked his first impressions. ”We needed to settle down and we settled down defensively, but offensively we never settled down and that was a shame because I thought we were going to be all right.”

The Tauais combined for 158 of the Mustangs’ 215 rushing yards and Phil Tauai passed for 60 more.

Perhaps it was the first two plays of the second half, with Kalaheo leading 14-0, that epitomized this game.
